Winning Secrets of a CEO – Julia Phillips
The third blog in our winning secrets series is from the events industry. Meet Julia Phillips, owner of Potting Shed Events, a corporate events agency based in the UK but delivering projects worldwide. Julia is an event delivery expert, delivering creative logistics that save you time and creating powerful shared experiences to deepen connections in your team.
Her LinkedIn describes her as an “all-round ‘little black book’ for all”. Sounds great to us!
What is the most important benefit of running your own business?
Running my own business allows me to treat people the way I wish I had been treated at work. This includes all staff, suppliers, clients, and peers.
What qualities do you appreciate most in the people that you work with?
I always look for honesty, transparency, attitude, and aptitude… I can teach the rest!
What is your biggest top tip that you would give to someone just starting their own business?
Try and find the balance between being an expert and being a permanent student.
What is the mistake you’ve made in your business journey that has taught you the most?
Thinking I needed to share the business with someone and that would remove the stress. It actually increased it and what I needed was a support network.
What are your main values in your business life and how have they impacted where your business is today?
Excellence, people first, kindness.
They are the pillars of how we work, how we show up and help define who we want to work with: clients, staff and suppliers.
A huge thanks to Julia for answering our questions and sharing her knowledge and experience in the events industry.
We will soon have more wisdom from CEOs who have experienced the ups and downs of running a business. Keep an eye out for the next episode in the series!
